Matteo De Marco is a student at the prestigious Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. His distinctive pictorial language creates a unique form of abstraction, both concealing and evoking scenes of streets and monumental buildings that emerge like images from a fading memory.
p: Tell us something about yourself, because we don’t know anything about you other than the fact that you create excellent paintings. What year are you in? How would you define your pictorial language? Did you paint as a child?
MdM: First of all, thank you for the compliments. I am currently in the second year of a two-year Master’s programme in Painting at the Brera Academy. As for my pictorial language, the tonal atmosphere and softness of transitions are the result of a process involving the accumulation and layering of painterly and graphic interventions. Whether it is a mark or a colour, the work emerges from this process and the theoretical research behind it.
Yes, I painted as a child, but I began taking painting seriously around the age of fourteen, when I asked to transfer from a scientific high school to an art school.

MATTEO DE MARCO ON HIS PRACTISE
P: Can you explain the technique you use and your choice of colour palette, which conveys a sense of comfort and familiarity?
MdM: In general, my work begins with drawing, a private practice that I rarely publish or exhibit. The drawings are often accompanied by photos, frequently taken out of focus to create distance from the subject. Starting from this material, I create colour studies in watercolour, and sometimes oil, on scraps of paper or canvas. The actual artwork comes afterwards.
I use various painting techniques, but I prefer watercolour on paper for small formats and oil for larger formats. Both techniques share a similar process: applying thin layers of colour that give the work depth, build its atmosphere and, above all, satisfy my need for time and contemplation as the piece takes shape.
The colour palette is chosen based on feeling and experience. I juxtapose, select, mix and layer colours while observing how the work develops and considering which tones will achieve the desired depth and atmosphere of the painting. Of course, my technical knowledge of colour also plays a fundamental role.

p: We’ve noticed that you participate in numerous group exhibitions organized by institutions. How do you find your space within these events?
MdM: For that I have to thank the Academy and my professors, who appreciate my work and include me in group exhibitions supported by the institution.
